University Professorship is the university’s highest distinction reserved for extraordinary professors who are internationally recognized and respected as leaders in their research field. Compared to their colleagues, University Professors have no administrative obligations, more research time and exceptional facilities. A University Professor is appointed for a five year period. As of 2013 Jaap Seidell and Jelle Jolles have been appointed as University Professor.
Appointments and reappointments of University Professors are made by the Executive Board upon recommendation of the deans and after close considerations of vice-rectors. The appointment of the University Professorship is for five years. Faculty members who have completed service as University Professor may retain the title as a honorific distinction.
