Accomodation for PhD students and guests
HOUSING IN THE NETHERLANDS
Affordable housing is hard to get by in the Netherlands, especially in popular cities like around Amsterdam. We recommend you start to search for accommodation as soon as you know you will be coming to the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, so space is scarce. House prices in the Netherlands have surged in the last few years, and as a result, finding affordable accommodation in the main Dutch cities can be a challenge. Unlike what you might be used to, a substantial part of your budget will probably be spent on rent and other housing related costs. For example, a one-bedroom apartment to rent in Amsterdam can range from €1,100 € 1,700 a month while three-bedroom apartments start from around €2,300. In addition, there will be mandatory costs for utility and water bills, municipal taxes and insurances.
Depending on the neighborhood and size of the apartment or house, count on approximately €1,200-€ 1,500 euros a month for just the rent of a studio / small apartment. In addition, there will be mandatory costs for utility and water bills, municipal taxes and insurances. If you are planning to come to Amsterdam with your partner and or children, be aware that it is even more difficult to find affordable housing in Amsterdam and surroundings.

SHORT STAY HOUSING
Depending on the availability, we can offer our international PhD’s, visiting staff, Post Docs and guests accommodation for a minimum period of one month and a maximum period of one year (if available) in the Short Stay Housing. This type of accommodation generally concerns complete furnished studios with private facilities. More information about the studios in Short Stay housing.
What to expect about housing in Amsterdam
Our short stay accommodation consists of furnished rooms with private facilities. Given the shortage of accommodation, you may find the room you get is smaller or not the standard you had expected. Accommodation in Amsterdam is not only very limited, but also very expensive. The accommodation we offer are rooms in the social housing market for which people in the Netherlands regularly will have to wait around 10 up to 12 years for. The number of couple / family apartments is even more limited.
The short stay accommodation options are at Uilenstede (Amstelveen) and also located in various areas of the Amsterdam metropolitan area. In a relatively small city as Amsterdam, we consider all of these locations as safe and nearby the Vu. Vu Amsterdam can be reached easily by bike and public transport from all the locations.
For our international VU Amsterdam PhD students we have a very limited number of studios and small apartments available that can be rented for the complete period of the PhD project with a maximum of 5 years. This type of accommodation generally concerns unfurnished studios with private facilities. More information about the different apartments in PhD housing.
HOUSING OPTIONS FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES
Unfortunately, most of the accommodation we offer are for 1 person. For couples and families, options are even less than for individual persons. The number 2 or 3 room apartments we offer is very, very limited and are only available for the maximum period of one year.
We advise families with children to find their own accommodation on the private market and search for contracts longer than 1 year. It is allways difficult if you have to move to a different location with finding new schools/ daycare / general practitioners.
Another option is for guest / employees to come alone to the Netherlands first and try to find accommodation for their families while living here.
VU Amsterdam has a a contract with Htel Serviced Apartments. They provide fully furnished apartments for short and extended stay based on full service. There are 300 apartments in two locations: Amsterdam Buitenveldert and Amstelveen. The apartments are luxurious and vary in size from 22m2 to 335m2. When booking, please inform them that you are a guest of VU Amsterdam to get a nice discount.
