Academic writing in Dutch
Number of sessions:
  5 x 2 hours   
Duration: 5 - 7 weeks
The Academic writing in Dutch course consists of six lessons of two hours each. During the lessons you will learn all about the steps of the writing process, from the preparation phase to dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. Each step involves new exercises. In between lessons, you will complete several writing assignments and receive feedback on these from the teacher.

Basic Dutch on Campus
Number of sessions: 5 hours a week  
Duration: 8 weeks
Are you a VU student? Would you like to learn enough Dutch alongside your studies to help you feel more at home on campus? With 'Basic Dutch on Campus' you will learn e.g. to introduce yourself, do some shopping, order a meal and chat with local students and teachers. The VU offers international students two modules of this specific course at a greatly reduced rate (regular student price is €345). Finished the course? Then you receive a ‘Basic Dutch on Campus’ certificate. 

Coaching

A coach can help you to regain an overview of what you are doing, or to work out what steps you have to take to make progress again. 

Dutch course for the NT2 State Exam II (Intensive)
Number of sessions: 
Duration: 9 weeks
On the daytime group course Dutch for the NT2 State Exam II, you will learn Dutch up to B2 level in one calendar year. This means you will be able to understand difficult texts, write your own texts on a variety of topics, speak Dutch fluently and correctly, express your opinion and participate in discussions. 

Dutch for work and study
Number of sessions: 16 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 8 weeks
Would you like to learn Dutch at evening classes, with five to seven hours self-study per week? The evening course will take you to beginner’s level at the very least, but you will also have the option of continuing to a higher level, all the way up to C1. The modules of Dutch for work and study start four times a year and the classes are twice a week. After two course modules of eight weeks, you will have a good command of the basics. On completion of six modules, you will be able to understand difficult texts, speak Dutch fluently and correctly, express your opinion and participate in discussions.

Dutch for work and study sprint
Number of sessions: 16 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 8 weeks
Is your first language German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or Afrikaans? You will be able to learn the basics of Dutch more quickly. This course is the fast track of 'Dutch for work and study'. Dutch for work and study SPRINT (one module) is identical to Dutch for work and study but the pace is twice as fast: Levels 1.1 and 1.2 in a single course period (September). 

Dutch Spelling and Grammar Refresher Course
Number of sessions: 2 x 3 hours
Duration: 2- 4 weeks
During these sessions, you will refresh your knowledge of Dutch spelling and grammar, putting it into practise by tackling a range of relevant exercises. We cover a wide range of topics, from verb endings (d’s and t’s) to the correct use of prepositions.

Everyday Dutch Course on Saturday
Number of sessions: 16 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 8 weeks
Would you like to learn Dutch to help you with your day-today activities? Why not join our Saturday course Everyday Dutch? Within four months, you will learn to understand and use the basics of the Dutch language (A2): all the handy words and turns of phrase you need to live your everyday life in the Netherlands.

Lastige kwesties in het Nederlands  
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours 
Duration: 1 day 
This workshop offers a succinct treatment of a number of tricky issues regarding word use and sentence construction in Dutch. You learn how to deal with such problems as faulty coordination and inversion, and in general how to make sure your sentences stay on track.

Op weg naar een samenhangende tekst  
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours
Duration: 1 day  
This workshop deals with the question of how you make the coherence visible in your papers or your dissertation. You will find out about all the necessary ingredients for a coherent text, at the level of the section, the paragraph and the sentence.

Professional Dutch
Number of sessions: 16 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 16 weeks, 1 class a week
Professional Dutch is a semi-intensive course (16 weeks, one class a week) for people who already have a good command of the Dutch language (B2/B2+) and would like to improve their language skills for the purpose of career advancement or higher education. For example, you are expected to write formal letters, essays, theses, or to give a presentation.

Schrijven in een academische stijl

This workshop is aimed at students who wonder what the style of their thesis should be or have been told by their supervisor that their style of writing is too subjective or informal, and consequently does not meet the standards for a dissertation.


Academic English: Speaking & Writing
Number of sessions: 6 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 6 - 8 weeks
This Academic English course focuses on improving students’ speaking and writing skills in an academic context. After this course you will be able to write clear academic texts, engage in informal and tutorial discussion, and tackle that English degree program with much more ease and confidence.

Academic Style  
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours
Duration: 1 day
In this workshop, we will tackle the issue of formality and academic style in your text. We will work on a number of topics. 

Advanced Writing in English
Number of sessions: 2 hours each week
Duration: 
This course focuses on resolving linguistic issues that individual students still have in their English, and on further refining (academic) style and textual coherence.

Clear and effective writing 
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours
Duration: 1 day
This workshop is aimed at students writing their thesis in English who have a solid command of English but are looking for ways to improve their texts with regard to clarity and effectiveness.

Editing Service

The editing service is available for master's students and PhD candidates who want help to improve the English or Dutch in their thesis or dissertation. The editing service provides feedback on the accuracy, clarity, and style of your writing in English or Dutch.

Overcoming your writer's block
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours
Duration: 1 day
This workshop is aimed at students who are writing their thesis and who want to learn how to be more effective as writers and avoid getting stuck. 

TOEFL ITP Preparation Course
Number of sessions: 7 x 2,5 hours
Duration: 7 - 9 weeks
In this TOEFL ITP Preparation Course you will improve your abilities in English and get ready to take the TOEFL ITP test. The focus of the course is on the test itself. 

Top ten grammar and language issues  
Number of sessions: 3,5 hours
Duration: 1 day
If you don’t have the time to take a complete English course at this point of your studies, you’re welcome to come to this workshop where we will discuss the most frequent errors in English texts written by speakers of Dutch.
