To make the daily lives of people with spasticity easier, four VU Master's students in Human Movement Sciences Research are developing a special glove.
Spasticity
When the doctor taps under your knee with a hammer, a reflex occurs, which is caused by the receptor transmitting a signal to the brain for this. When a specific part of the brain area is damaged – for example due to an infarction – noise is generated on that line and the reflex is not properly regulated. As a result, it is constantly active and there is a continuous contraction of the muscles: we call this spasticity.
The helping glove
To improve the hand function of people suffering from spasticity, Madelina Riurean, David Gotti, Cara Knott and Tobi Makinde developed the MadGlove. This glove is designed to withstand the muscle tension exerted on the hand. As a result, the hand can be opened again and objects can be grasped. Read more (in Dutch).
