Vacancy: Scientific Coordinator for the ASI

The Amsterdam Sustainability Institute (ASI) is a network for interdisciplinary sustainability research at VU Amsterdam. Based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, the ASI aims to connect VU researchers with each other and with society, in order to increase their scientific and social impact.

Since ASI was founded in 2019, our network and range of activities have been constantly growing. Therefore, we are now looking for a young researcher to join the ASI management team as scientific coordinator. In addition, you will be working with the university’s sustainability office on reducing the environmental impact of how we do research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. 

Your tasks

Coordination of ASI research clusters

ASI currently consists of six active research clusters, each led by two researchers from different faculties. You are their contact person and responsible for shaping and growing the clusters. You update the ASI team on the progress of the clusters and make sure that they are well promoted in the ASI communication channels.

Coordination ASI seed money programme

Every year, ASI selects research projects for its seed money programme with the aim to foster innovative and interdisciplinary research across VU faculties. You will be responsible for the coordination of the seed money call and remain in contact with the winning projects throughout the year.

ASI management team

You will join the ASI management team and meet them regularly to coordinate the institute’s projects. The team consists of the director, managing director, student assistant and you and is supported by the scientific steering committee and the cluster coordinators

Sustainable research at VU Amsterdam

Together with the managing director, you are part of the university’s sustainability office and responsible for the research cluster. You contribute to the sustainability ambitions of VU Amsterdam as stated in the strategy 2020-2025 and will lead projects to reduce the environmental footprint of our research. You are also chairing the cluster consisting of researchers from different faculties.

Your profile

  • You are an employee of VU Amsterdam at post-doc or assistant professor level.
  • You can dedicate 10 hours per week to this task.
  • You have personal and professional affinity with sustainability and interdisciplinary research and want to contribute to the sustainability ambitions of VU Amsterdam.
  • You are a team player and enjoy working with people.
  • You are keen to build networks and able to work in dynamic contexts.
  • Experience or affinity with communication and event management is a plus.

What we offer

A challenging position in a dynamic environment and access to a lively academic network. You will join the ASI management team and gain expertise in coordinating a research network, managing projects and applying for grants. You will be remunerated for 0.2 FTE and can schedule the working hours according to your availability, with regular meetings with the ASI team. The starting date and duration of employment are subject to discussion.

Our ambition as ASI is to contribute relevant, excellent and impactful science to society, in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.

ASI has the objective to build strong and lasting connections among VU researchers across disciplines and faculties with a view towards developing novel multi- and interdisciplinary research and acquiring funding for it. It also acts as knowledge center for SDG-related research in the VU.
