He shared the research results of a valuable collaboration with economists within their joint NWO research project. They studied how changes in land use impacted socio-economic sustainability goals in South-East Asia based on data from case studies. NWO interviewed him about this research project.
‘This is a great example of working closely together with other disciplines. Interdisciplinary collaboration is key in this project. In a different research project, economics PhD candidate Diana Garcia Rojas looked at data from large-scale surveys and demographic information about poverty and how children grow and she then converted this into data for each region. We have combined her results with information about changes in nature areas from 2005 and from 2015. Geographer and PhD candidate Jonas Appelt has helped us to understand the changes in land use. With this holistic view, we could see how a decrease in poverty is related to food security and sustainable land use.’
