Inaugural lecture Miranda Klaver

21 September 2022
Inaugural Lecture by Prof. M. Klaver: Longing for a heaven on earth? The imagination of charismatic Christianity

The wonderful world of charismatic Christianity: network Christianity, megachurches, Pentecostal churches and renewal movements

There is much confusion about Pentecostal churches, charismatic religious leaders and charismatic groups. In her inaugural lecture, professor of anthropology of religion Miranda Klaver provides an overview of different types of charismatic Christianity using an approach to religion as desire and imagination.

By looking at religious practices, Klaver distinguishes four types: network Christianity, megachurches, established Pentecostal churches and charismatic renewal movements. What connects this globally growing movement is the focus on the Holy Spirit and special experiences such as prophecy and divine healing. Through the personal experience of the Spirit, believers know: God is actively involved in this world.

The inaugural lecture will take place on Sept. 22, 2022, at 3:45 p.m. in the VU Aula. The ceremony can also be followed online.
