Inaugural lecture David Gushee

3 May 2022
On the 4th of May 2022 at 15.45 the inaugural lecture 'Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies: A Central Task for Christian Social Ethics Today' of professor David Gushee takes place. He is appointed to the chair of Christian Social Ethics. He is appointed to the chair of Christian Social Ethics.

David Gushee tells about the discovery that Christian ethics must defend democracy today from its reactionary Christian enemies. But it's not a new problem.

Many Christians were trained to value democracy and to assume its compatibility with Christianity. But this can no longer be assumed, as Christian support for authoritarian and frankly anti-democratic politicians and regimes is visible all over the world -- including in the world's oldest democracy, the United States. Now democracy must be defended from reactionary Christians. This seems to be a novel problem, but history shows it is a repeated pattern. What do we do it about it now? We fight hard for democracy as a task of Christian ethics.
