(De)Constructing Spaces continues

13 January 2022
Just an exhibition on colonial entanglements is not enough. What else is needed to address the coloniality of the VU Amsterdam, and to really start the process of decolonization? Join the conversation on January 20th! (English/Dutch)

Join the conversation with Dean Susan Legêne and historian Wim Manuhutu on power, decolonization and the VU Amsterdam, and reflect with VU writer Babs Gons. Let us know what you need and see as needed to make the VU a truly inclusive university.

What is our relation to the colonial past? And to the consequences of it in the present day? Which steps are necessary to make VU Amsterdam a truly inclusive university?  Which hidden colonial stories are entangled with the university? And how do the heritage collections come into play?

This meeting is part of the exhibition (De)Constructing Spaces – colonial entanglement in the VU heritage collections, shown till 15 February in the Heritage display (next to the entrance of the Library, main building 1st floor) and online.

The exhibition showcases the colonial entanglements of objects and documents in the heritage collections. It connects the stories of World maps, the Amsterdam-based brewery of VU-financer Willem Hovy, bills for Mrs. Idenburg-Deutz in now-named Bogor (Indonesia), involved students in the Netherlands and Papua, and Christmas cards of the Moravian Church, with large-scale colonial power dynamics.

(De)Constructing Spaces is produced by Gyonne Goedhoop (Counter/Narratives) and Liselotte Neervoort (VU Amsterdam, University Library), with special thanks to Danny Soekarnsingh (VU Amsterdam, Diversity Office) and Quinsy Gario (VU Amsterdam, Faculty of Humanities).
