Aletta Kraneveld new dean

13 July 2022
The Executive Board has appointed Aletta Kraneveld as dean of the Faculty of Science with effect from 1 December 2022.

Aletta Kraneveld received her PhD in pharmacology from Utrecht University in 1994. In 2016, she became professor of "Interdisciplinary Translation Pharmacology" at the same university. Currently, in addition to her professorship, she is also vice dean of research of the Faculty of Science of Utrecht University. She has held various leadership roles nationally and internationally, including in the areas of sustainability, diversity and integrity. From her current position, she plays an important role in the implementation of Recognition and Rewards. Her leadership style is open and respectful to all and she knows how to weigh different views and interests. This fits perfectly with the Art of Engagement, our leadership culture. In addition, Aletta has a large national and international network.

Aletta Kraneveld: "My heart goes out to education and fundamental research: the basis of innovative developments for society. Together with the faculty's colleagues and the Executive Board, I hope to further strengthen the faculty's strength and resilience."

Esther van den Hengel, managing director, is very pleased with the appointment of Aletta Kraneveld: "She has extensive national and international leadership experience and is therefore a very suitable candidate for this important position in our complex and ambitious faculty. Her management style and ability to connect fit in well with the collegial and direct way in which we interact within the faculty."

The Executive Board and the faculty are convinced that Aletta will be an inspiring dean. With her visionary, calm, and open way of governing, she will strengthen the ranks of VU Amsterdam further. Her ability to unite will help Kraneveld, together with students and staff, to maintain the chosen direction and realise the faculty's ambitions. Aletta Kraneveld is a worthy successor to Professor Guus Schreiber.

The recruitment and selection process followed the current nomination procedure, in which representatives of the young academic community and the participation council were closely involved.
