Temporary stop free of charge Open Access publishing Springer

12 October 2021

The maximum number of items for 2021 has then been reached. Make sure that you do not inadvertently receive the invoice yourself.

The agreement that the VSNU has concluded with Springer on behalf of the Dutch universities, including the Vrije Universiteit and the Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, covers a maximum of 2,080 publication per year.

During the suspension of the deal you can choose to publish closed access (free of charge) or Open Access for a fee, but in the latter case you will have to finance and arrange the APC payment yourself. There is no central VU fund for Open Access that can be claimed afterwards.

Research funder requirements

If your research funder (e.g. NWO or Horizon Europe) demands that you share your publications immediately (without embargo) and under an open license, please contact the Open Access team of the University Library.

What about next year?

Depending on the outcome of the new round of negotiations with Springer Nature, corresponding authors will be able to take advantage of new APC discounts from January 1, 2022.
