The agreement that the VSNU has concluded with Springer on behalf of the Dutch universities, including the Vrije Universiteit and the Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, covers a maximum of 2,080 publication per year.
During the suspension of the deal you can choose to publish closed access (free of charge) or Open Access for a fee, but in the latter case you will have to finance and arrange the APC payment yourself. There is no central VU fund for Open Access that can be claimed afterwards.
Alternative route authors VU: Open Access after 6 months
Authors of the Vrije Universiteit (with the exception of VUmc) can alternatively share their article Open Access via the VU Research Portal. Based on Article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act, this is possible after 6 months. All you need to do to make the publisher's
version of your articles automatically accessible to everyone after six months, is register for You share, we take care.
Alternative route for authors of the Amsterdam UMC, VUmc
Authors of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, can alternatively publish the author accepted manuscript (AAM) version of their article Open Access with an embargo of 12 months via the Amsterdam UMC Research Portal. Please send the AAM version to Tristan Coco / Medical Library – AMC (email@example.com).
Research funder requirements
If your research funder (e.g. NWO or Horizon Europe) demands that you share your publications immediately (without embargo) and under an open license, please contact the Open Access team of the University Library.
What about next year?
Depending on the outcome of the new round of negotiations with Springer Nature, corresponding authors will be able to take advantage of new APC discounts from January 1, 2022.
