Students Learning on the job @ Digital Innovation Lab

30 April 2021
The Digital Business and Innovation (DBI) Master's students work on real digital challenges of organizations in the course: Digital Innovation Lab. The students go through the entire design thinking process, from the brief to data collection, ideation, development, testing, and scaling of a solution for an actual client. The end goal is to deliver a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

The DBI students go through the entire design thinking process, from the brief to data collection, ideation, development, testing, and scaling of a solution for an actual client. The end goal is to deliver a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

One of the organizations that participated in this years lab was Heineken. A group of students: Daniƫlle Schultz, Sylvie Verkinderen, Anna Spies, Carolina Zgradich, took on the challenge to discover "new ways of bringing moments of shared experience and joy to Heineken customers." The aim was to connect offline touchpoints to new online platforms. A great extra experience for this group was that Heineken also let the students participate in the IBM Garage. They acted as a "client" on behalf of Heineken. They were connected to one IBM team and worked together with them the rest of the Garage. They participated in the final (winning!) pitch.

How the students look back on the experience

'This course enabled us to use our passion and skills to develop unique ideas that create value for both the client and users. It was a lovely learning experience since it allowed us to see what such a process looks and feels like within an actual organization. It also taught us valuable professional experience, like preparing and giving a product pitch and how to go from an initial hypothesis to a concrete idea. We learned a lot about collaboration with one another within the group and with our client. Working with Heineken was an enjoyable experience since they also work according to agile principles. You want to be able to move and adapt quickly, and luckily Heineken facilitated this. "
