Opening Academic Year on 6 September: happiness & resilience

28 July 2021
We start the new academic year with the Opening of the Academic Year. The theme this year is happiness and resilience of young people, especially students. What does the corona crisis do to their well-being? What do they need now? VU alumna Jacobine Geel will discuss this with four leading VU professors: Heleen Riper, Arne Popma, Hein Daanen and 'happiness professor' Meike Bartels.

We call on older generations to join us as a university and invest in young people. Not only are they the future; we can also learn so much from them, explains VU president Mirjam van Praag in her keynote speech. Consider our own, highly committed talents: the students of VU@ease who offer fellow students a listening ear; the winners of the Kuyper Award with their app that measures addiction susceptibility; the leaders of the New Urban Collective, who empower young people; or the ProFit dream team, which is committed to a healthy campus.

On 6 September, students like these and various other guests will inspire us with their amazing stories during the Opening of the Academic Year. They will show us how we can get back on our feet after such a long crisis year. And enjoy a column and spoken word by Free Writer Babs Gons, with musical accompaniment from Shishani Vranckx.

Please note! Due to corona measures, we regret we cannot receive you on the VU campus. But you are more than welcome to attend the festive opening of the academic year online!
