Sustainability reporting is increasingly seen as a matter of urgency, with rapid and ongoing changes in the regulatory environment, both in the European Union and internationally. The keynote speech was given by Peter Sampers (Professor financial accounting at Maastricht University, formerly in charge of corporate reporting at DSM). This was followed by reactions from panelists Jan Agterhuis (Impact Controller at Triodos Bank) and Wim Bartels (Partner corporate reporting at KPMG), both VU alumni.
The more than 55 participants contributed to a lively discussion moderated by Arjan Brouwer. While there was consensus that the increased emphasis on information about climate risk, environmental impact, social performance and governance is fundamentally changing corporate reporting, we’re all still very much in a process of discovery of what this will mean for reporting companies, auditors, information users and regulators. It is certainly a topic that we will continue to explore together with our alumni.
