On September 28, Rec tor Magnificus Jeroen Geurts will open the VU photo exhibition “Stu dying with a Disability.” This exhibition, held on the beautiful ca mpus plaza, features powerful portraits and personal stories of VU st udents with disabilities, such as chronic conditions, mental health c hallenges, or other support needs.
What is it like to stud y with a chronic condition, mental health vulnerability, or other sup port needs? What challenges do you face, what helps you move forward, and what does it take to fully participate in education and student life?
Starting Monday, September 28, nine VU students will shar e their personal answers to these questions in the new photo exhibiti on “Studying with a Disability” on Campusplein. Rector M agnificus Jeroen Geurts will open the exhibition that day.
Through p ortraits and personal stories, the students share the obstacles they face during their studies, as well as their resilience, ambitions, an d perseverance. Their stories highlight that, for many students, the need for support is part of daily life, without defining who they are or what they can achieve.
“I have a disability, but I am not my disability.”
With this exhibition, VU Amsterdam aims to foster greater understanding, recognition, and awareness. The personal stories invite us to reflect on the diversity of student ex periences and show how appropriate support can contribute to equal op portunities and academic success. Accessible and inclusive education is something for which we all share responsibility.

Students, faculty, staff, and visitor s are warmly welcome to the festive opening on Monday, September 28 b etween 12:00 and 13:00. Visit the exhibition, read the stories behind the portraits, and join the conversation about accessible and inclus ive education. (A brief description of the program can be added h ere, such as a welcome address, a guided tour, or a meet-and-greet wi th some of the students featured in the portraits.)
The ex hibition is an initiative of the Student Development Department (SOZ) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and was organized by the Studying wi th a Disability (SMF) team. Through these students’ stories, the VU aims to contribute to a learning environment where every student fee ls welcome, seen, and supported.
