From individual actions to integrated working: building health from family, school, and neighborhood

Professor of Health Sciences Carry Renders researches how we can build a healthy society in which healthy living is not dependent on chance, income, or zip code. In h er inaugural lecture, she demonstrates that obesity and health dispar ities arise from an interplay of living environment, social norms, po licy, and economic incentives. Therefore, she chooses integrated work ing: collaborating across sectors and levels to create conditions tha t facilitate healthy living.

With three key points – engageme nt, connection, and flexibility – Renders focuses on strengthening healthy living environments around family, school, and neighborhood, strengthening community strength and health literacy, and learning an d adapting through research. She examines health and behavioral outco mes, but places particular emphasis on the change process: what works , for whom, and why, how to improve processes, and how measures can r einforce and sustain each other.
