Healthcare is at a tipping point. We are seeing incr easingly complex patients, and workloads and healthcare costs are ris ing. At the same time, we bear responsibility for sustainability: wha t we do has an impact on both people and the environment. Therefore, we must make choices – and provide better justification for them. T his is what Professor of Anesthesiology Denise Veelo says in her inau gural lecture.

Innovation offers opportunities. Artificial inte lligence, precision medicine, and digital tools help us make healthca re more personalized and smarter. But innovation doesn't automaticall y mean doing more. It helps us determine where to invest, where to be cautious, and when to honestly acknowledge that a treatment no longe r adds value.

Veelo's mission is to use research and technology to guide these choices in perioperative care: acting smarter where n ecessary, doing less where possible, and sometimes consciously not do ing anything. With science and a moral compass, we build appropriate choices – for today's patients and tomorrow's society.
