On Limits explores t he experience of limitations and the (im)possibilities of breaking th rough them. The exhibition will be on view at the VU ART SCIENCE gall ery until May 1, 2026, and features work by Lotte Werkema, Eva Spiere nburg, Joshua Serafin and Meiro Koizumi.

Societies seek sa fety and control by creating order through limits and norms setting b oundaries and standards. This need, however, can also be misused to g ain power and exclude others. There is a tension between our rich inn er world, where everything seems possible, and the limits imposed by the world outside. This can evoke strong emotions, such as shame, ang er or alienation.

The artists give space to the experience of t hese limitations and explore alternative realities. Based on the artw orks, scientists from various disciplines engage in dialogue with the artist and the public, creating a multidisciplinary perspective on d ealing with norms and limitations. In this way, they explore how a so ciety can be formed, based on equality and inclusivity. The exhibitio n is part of A Broader Mind, a multidisciplinary educational programm e in which students from VU University Amsterdam explore social issue s.

The exhibition was co-curated by Sem Bannenberg, who researc hes how disability in art can lead to greater understanding of non-no rmative forms within human society. His research touches on topics su ch as corpoliteracy, queer body theory and embodiment theory.
