Research by p hysiotherapist Marije Sleijser-Koehorst shows that healthcare profess ionals gain better guidance in diagnosing and treating people with ce rvical radicular syndrome, a condition in which neck pain radiates in to the arm. In her doctoral thesis, she describes which symptoms and physical tests contribute most to establishing an accurate diagnosis and provides greater clarity about the factors that influence recover y.

Thanks to these insights, general practitioners and physioth erapists can more accurately estimate how a patient’s recovery is l ikely to progress. Specific questionnaires also offer additional supp ort in monitoring progress and tailoring treatment more closely to th e individual. This can lead to earlier recognition of the condition a nd more appropriate care.

In addition, her research points to a possible positive effect of aerobic exercise on recovery processes. Although further research in humans is needed, these findings suggest that physical activity may play a more prominent role in treatment i n the future. The results therefore not only contribute to improved c linical decision-making, but may also enhance the quality of life of people with these common neck complaints.
