Why does a story or a film make you feel as if you are in another world? Why do you, as a reader or viewer, empathize with the characters? Pr ofessor of Ancient Greek Language and Literature Rutger Allan will di scuss in his lecture the various narrative techniques used to transpo rt the reader into the world of the story.

Allan will illustrat e a number of these techniques using examples (translated into Dutch) from the Greek epic the Iliad by Homer (8th century BC). This influe ntial epic leaves no stone unturned to immerse us, as readers or list eners, in the world of the story.
