On Wednesday 24 June 2026, CICJ organizes a book launch for the recently published volume on 'Emotions, Ethics and Mass Atrocities'.
The book explo res how scholars, teachers and practitioners navigate the emotions, a nd corresponding ethical dilemmas, of working in the field of mass at rocities. Being continuously exposed to the suffering of the victims, the crimes of the perpetrators and the lasting impact on post-confli ct societies, may take a toll on the wellbeing of scholars, students and practitioners. These inadvertent consequences have long been igno red, in research and in practice, but lead to ethical conundrums. To what extent do negative emotions influence the work and decision-maki ng of scholars, teachers and practitioners, and should they play a ro le?
The book will be launched with a roundtable discussion with Thijs Bouwknegt, Marije Luitjens, Caecilia van Peski, Maartje Weerde steijn and Martin Witteveen which will be moderated by Alette Smeuler s.
