The Staten Bible Turns Out to Be the Result of a Broad S ocial Project
The Statenbijbel is not only the work of a team o
f translators, but the result of a broad social project. Research int
o the creation of the Old Testament translation shows how ecclesiasti
cal and political interests, scholarly insights, and readers’ expec
tations influenced the Bible edition. Furthermore, more than half of
the text corresponds to an older Dutch translation. This is evident f
rom research by classicist and translation scholar Kees Jan van Linde
n.
