Medicines do no t work equally well for every user. As more medicines are used simult aneously, the risk of errors, side effects, and other problems increa ses. When dispensing medicines, proper use, tailored to the patient's needs and wishes, has come to the forefront. This is stated by Profe ssor of Pharmaceutical Care Jacqueline Hugtenburg in her inaugural le cture.

Patients' demand for care has changed significantly with in a short period of time. The internet and mobile phones influence h ow we interact with patients, who have increasingly sought informatio n about their illness and potential treatments. Furthermore, there ar e more and more elderly people living at home until a later age. The pressure this causes is exacerbated by medicine shortages and the eve r-increasing shortage of staff. Much greater consideration must be gi ven to the environmental impact of medicines. New pharmaceutical care must anticipate all these issues, requiring a flexible working metho d.
