DESCRIPTION:
New insights for better care for neck complai
nts
Research by physiotherapist Marije Sleijser-Koehors
t shows that healthcare professionals gain better guidance in diagnos
ing and treating people with cervical radicular syndrome, a condition
in which neck pain radiates into the arm. In her doctoral thesis, sh
e describes which symptoms and physical tests contribute most to esta
blishing an accurate diagnosis and provides greater clarity about the
factors that influence recovery. Thanks to these insights, general p
ractitioners and physiotherapists can more accurately estimate how a
patient’s recovery is likely to progress. Specific questionnaires a
lso offer additional support in monitoring progress and tailoring tre
atment more closely to the individual. This can lead to earlier recog
nition of the condition and more appropriate care. In addition, her r
esearch points to a possible positive effect of aerobic exercise on r
ecovery processes. Although further research in humans is needed, the
se findings suggest that physical activity may play a more prominent
role in treatment in the future. The results therefore not only contr
ibute to improved clinical decision-making, but may also enhance the
quality of life of people with these common neck complaints. More inf
