In this exhibition, Prof. Dr. Ferenc Postma and Dr. Margriet Gosker talk about their libr ary. This historic collection was donated by the couple to Vrije Univ ersiteit Amsterdam in 2012. In total, this former private library (th e Postma-Gosker Library) consists of over 2,100 titles.

Th e collection comprises numerous extremely rare and unique Protestant works from the 15th to the late 18th century, with an emphasis on bib lical studies. Exegetical, philological and grammatical-Hebrew studie s form the main part. In addition, the collection contains many title s relating to Hungary and the history of the Hungarian Protestant Chu rch. It also includes numerous academic writings from other Protestan t universities, particularly in Germany.

A particular focus is on academic publications from the Frisian University in Franeker. The se include hundreds of disputations, dissertations and inaugural lect ures. During its existence from 1585 to 1811, this university was an important Protestant educational centre in Europe, where more than 1, 200 Hungarians came to study, mainly theology.

In 2022, the Pos tma-Gosker Library was expanded with a second donation. That part is central to this exhibition. This new donation comprises more than two hundred titles, the content of which directly ties in with the focus of the 2012 donation. In addition, this donation contains several ma sterpieces, including the great work by Joannes Reuchlin, The rud imentis hebraicis. Pforzheim, 1506. Exceptional in size and form at is the 34-volume Thesaurus antiquitatum sacrarum by the 1 8th-century Italian scholar Blasio Ugolino. This work, printed in Ven ice, contains a large collection of scholarly studies and treatises o n the ancient Hebrew world. A library in itself!
