Healthcare is at a tipping point. We are seei ng increasingly complex patients, and workloads and healthcare costs are rising. At the same time, we bear responsibility for sustainabili ty: what we do has an impact on both people and the environment. Ther efore, we must make choices – and provide better justification for them. This is what Professor of Anesthesiology Denise Veelo says in h er inaugural lecture.

Innovation offers opportunities. Artifici al intelligence, precision medicine, and digital tools help us make h ealthcare more personalized and smarter. But innovation doesn't autom atically mean doing more. It helps us determine where to invest, wher e to be cautious, and when to honestly acknowledge that a treatment n o longer adds value.

Veelo's mission is to use research and tec hnology to guide these choices in perioperative care: acting smarter where necessary, doing less where possible, and sometimes consciously not doing anything. With science and a moral compass, we build appro priate choices – for today's patients and tomorrow's society.
