Due to the stigma surrounding HIV in South Africa, people do not take their medication. Theologian Germari Krüger found how faith communities are successfully countering this.
"HIV continues to be a health problem in South African communities," Krüger says. "And the stigma around HIV affects the well-being of patients. It hinders therapy compliance, so people don't take their medication."
"My dissertation shows that faith communities make a major contribution to tackling HIV stigmatization. These are ideally suited to support patients, for example by organizing therapy adherence groups. They become beacons of acceptance by working together with local health centers and by dealing with people with HIV in a spirit of solidarity and social responsibility."
