Studying abroad

Boost your career prospects and your personal development

A study abroad is a unique experience. You are immersed in a new culture, you develop an international network and you improve your language skills. At VU Amsterdam, you can go on exchange during the third year of your studies. We have exchange agreements with around 215 universities around the world. Whether it’s Australia, Brazil or Germany that piques your interest, you can always find a destination that suits you.

You can also gain international experience here in the Netherlands. You can serve as the buddy of an international student, for example, or sign up for the VU Amsterdam Summer or Winter School.

The best time to study abroad is during the first semester of your third year. Most study programmes do not schedule mandatory courses during that period, allowing you to go on exchange without incurring a study delay. You can sign up and attend information sessions during your second year, so you have plenty of time to prepare.

The VU International Office is happy to help you with all the necessary steps if you are considering to study abroad. They organize information sessions, walk you through the registration procedure and can help you apply for a grant. They will assist you in making arrangements before you go, but also upon your return.

Were you not selected by VU International Office for an exchange semester? Or would you like to study at a university that is not an official VU partner? You can go abroad as a ‘free mover’, in which case you make the arrangements yourself. Naturally, you can also go on a study trip or do an internship abroad.
