Tools and techniques

We have a broad expertise in developing instruments for all types of experimental research within our beta faculty. We focus on design and prototyping of innovative electronic instruments and software. We have production facilities for a small batch and we can ramp up volumes by outsourcing to our production partners.

Design and test
We create our designs using Mentor Graphics E-CAD software with advanced simulation capabilities. An extensive collection of test and measurement instruments allow us to validate our design in real world. In a separate test facility we can do climate and EMC tests and we have an EMxpert, a 2D real-time EMC and EMI testing tool to rapidly diagnose and solve electromagnetic problems early in a the design cycle.

We have a complete range of surface mount technology equipment to build unique research instruments, prototypes and small series in-house. For our spin-off companies it allows us to perform a pre-production run before outsourcing to an assembly house. Building and thoroughly testing the pre-production units ensures the final product is correct saving very costly series production changes or rework.

Analog circuits
Analog electronics perform the interfacing to the “real world”. We design low noise circuits to measure small signals, controlling high voltages and high currents, feedback control and more. We use Spice simulation to verify correctness before manufacturing.

Field programmable gate arrays(FPGA)
Simply put, FPGA’s are a big collection of programmable, fast digital circuits on a single chip. They are very suitable to accurately synchronize measurements, can do many tasks really in parallel and run signal processing algorithms very fast. We create advanced FPGA based instruments containing analogue signal conditioning, Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog converters, microprocessor and Ethernet communication. For traditional FPGA’s design we use Mentor Graphics HDL Designer, Precision and Modelsim. For the Xilinx FPGA’s and Zynq System on a Chip designs we use Vivado.

IoT, microcontrollers, wired and wireless communication
We design intelligence into instruments to improve measurements, automate tedious tasks and control your experimental setup. Communication in the lab is traditionally wired; USB, Ethernet, Cabled PCIe, serial. For outdoor measurements and remote control we use mostly wireless communication standards such as Cellular(4G), XBee, Bluetooth and LoRa. This gives the researcher or student more freedom to operate, no more long and heavy cables to carry!

We use MicroChip, ARM (Arduino software compatible) or embedded Linux as processing cores. LED technology

LED technology is increasingly used in experimental setups. Wavelength specific or white light, continuous, pulsed or modulated power control electronics.

Software engineering
We develop software for your experimental setup. Data acquisition and control, web based experiments, real-time control, embedded, IoT integration in the cloud, you name it. We code in several languages, e.g. C, C++, Java, LabVIEW, LabWindows, PHP, HTML, JavaScript and Python.
