Research Theme Text, Culture, Religion and Heritage

This program focusses on research into the dynamics between culture and religion in past and present society: the role of religion in contemporary society, the impact of the religious past today, its manifestation in texts and culture, and the related heritage.

The program aims at stimulating cooperation between researchers from various faculties as well as from a broad range of disciplines, such as art history, law, cultural history, media studies, religious studies, literary history, anthropology, etc.

While the program concentrates on Dutch society, it will always take the international context into account. The program aims to support researchers working on immovable cultural and religious heritage, as visible and tangible representations of values, traditions and ways of life. It particularly aims to support researchers working on movable cultural and religious heritage, including intangible heritage, such as rituals, values, traditions, media, popular culture, story telling, etc. At the same time the program wants to foster interdisciplinary research into the diversity and impact of religion in Dutch society.

One of the aims of this program (being part of CLUE+) is also to support initiatives to set up interdisciplinary research projects. It seeks to cooperate with academic and social partners outside VU University, such as museums, heritage institutions, religious organisations in and outside Amsterdam. This program has as its ambition to (co)organize at least one big event each year.

Research Coordinator Prof. Dr. Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte

In 2021, Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte was appointed the coordinator of the new CLUE+ research programme Text, Culture, Religion and Heritage.
