Spectrum of stakeholder engagement in service learning

Service learning can be visualized in the form of a spectrum of level of stakeholder engagement.

It can constitute minimal to moderate levels of stakeholder engagement, where stakeholders assume more passive roles in which they are either informed, consulted on, or involved as advisors in the service learning initiatives. Whereas, it can also include higher forms of engagement where stakeholders assume more active role in the form of co-creation. In co-creation, stakeholders collaborate in conception, co-designing and execution of activities, and/or share equal stake in decision making and share ownership of the participatory initiative. This toolbox includes examples and inspirations across this spectrum of stakeholder engagement in service learning practices from VU Amsterdam.
