Research at the Faculty of Humanities

On this page you can find all information about research institutes, centers and projects

Research Institutes

Researchers of the Faculty of Humanities participate in one of the twelve Interfaculty Research Institutes of VU University. At present the overwhelming majority of researchers in our faculty is member of CLUE, focusing on heritage and history of cultural landscape and urban environment, or of the Network Institute that focuses on the economic, technological, social and communicative aspects of networks in which researchers from the fields of informatics, social sciences and humanities cooperate.

Research Centers and Research Projects

These research institutes form broad collaborative, interdisciplinary and interfaculty frameworks within which research centers and research projects find a place. Research projects are projects funded by external funds (national, European and global science foundations) including contract research for non-academic institutions. The themes of these research centers together give a good indication of the current research profile of the faculty of Humanities.

These are the research centers in which researchers of the faculty of Humanities play a key role:

  1. ACASA The Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology is a research and teaching center in the fields of Ancient Studies, Latin and Greek and Archeology, a joint center of VU University and the University of Amsterdam.
  2. ACCESS The Amsterdam Centre for Cross-Disciplinary Emotion and Sensory Studies provides a platform for cooperation between scholars from the humanities, the social sciences, and the life sciences.

  4. Amsterdam Gesture Center At the Amsterdam Gesture Center, based at the Vrije Universiteit/VU, we study the interplay of audible and visible bodily actions in communicative settings. 6. CLTL The Computational Lexicology & Terminology Lab (CLTL) models the understanding of natural language through computers with a central role for knowledge sources such as lexicons, ontologies and terminology. CLTL is part of the Department of Language and Communication and of the Network Institute.
  7. Historical Documentation Center for Dutch Protestantism Focuses on the history of Protestantism in the Netherlands since 1800. The center collects and makes accessible archives of Protestant and Evangelical persons and organizations who in the past two centuries have played a rol of importance in Dutch public life.
  8. Metaphor Lab The mission of the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam is to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and application in all areas of metaphor research inside and outside academic communities.
