Organic Matter laboratory

In this laboratory we study organic matter in the environment. Our work mostly focuses on northern ecosystems where we look at how organic matter is thawing, transported and degraded enroute to its marine burial.

We currently have a full suite of preparatory facilities and instruments to process and fractionate organic matter (muffle furnace, freezer dryer, drying oven, centrifuge, MARS accelerated solvent extractor, column chromatography, and Atmosbag) along with a mineral surface area analyser to measure sediment surface area (NOVA 4200e, 4 sample stations), and instruments to do compositional analyses (HACH spectrophotometer, VWR UV-spectrophotometer UV-1600PC) or compound collection for specific isotope analyses (Agilent 7890 GC-FID met Gerstel CIS4 injector and Preparative Fraction Collector).

We also have equipment that we specifically use for field expeditions, such as aquatic sensors (S::can spectro::lyser, CO2 and CH4 loggers/probes from Pro-Oceanus, Aquaread, AP-5000 and Aqualogger 7000 from Eijkelkamp), push point samplers, a drone (DJI Mavic 2 Pro), and Gas Analysers.
