CLUE+ Call for Funding Proposals

CLUE+ is the Vrije Universiteit interfaculty research institute for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage. Its main goal is to stimulate indisciplinary collaboration on societal challenges related to the Vrije Universiteit profile themes. To that aim, this call will fund the following types of activities:

  1. Academic/scientific meetings (e.g. conferences, expert meetings, workshops);
  2. Preparation for grant applications;
  3. Assistance to support research activities;
  4. Establishing or maintaining consortiums, networks and public and private partnerships;
  5. Policy development and consultancy initiatives;
  6. Valorisation activities.

Deadline for submission proposals: 6 February, 2022 before 23:59 hrs.
Selection of winning proposals: in the week of 21 February, 2022
Transfer of funding amount: before 1 December, 2022

Important Information

  • What are the assessment criteria?

    All applications will be assessed by the CLUE+ Management Team according to the following criteria:

    • Involvement of researchers from at least two CLUE+ affiliated research clusters or departments and of at least one CLUE+ member;
    • Interdisciplinarity;
    • Clear links to one of the CLUE+ research programmes and/or VU profile themes;
    • The quality, innovative nature and scientific impact of the proposal;
    • Diversity. Society, and with it our university community, is home to a wide variety of genders, sexual orientations, nationalities, cultures, ways of thinking and religions. It is important for the CLUE+ institute to always keep that diversity in mind when organizing events and activities.   • Ad 1. Academic meetings

    (or parts of /sessions in) like conferences, workshops, lectures (series), colloquiums, book presentations, webinars etc. You can apply for funding up to €3.000,-.

    How to apply?

    Applicants must submit the following documents:

    • Cover letter (max. 1 page A4).
    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €3.000,- (e.g. all costs have to be made in 2022). Please also mention in your detailed budget estimate third parties who will co-finance the (research) activity/event.
  • Ad 2. Preparation for grant applications.

    This CLUE+ grant, of max. € 3.000,-, will allow you to fund replacement of education tasks, in order to prepare for an application in a larger call. The calls to participate in can be either programmatic (e.g. Horizon Europe, NWA, NWO Large) or individual ones (e.g. NWO Open Competition, NWO Innovation scheme, ERC).

    How to apply?

    Applications must contain the following documents:

    • A draft proposal of max. 3 pages. The draft proposal should contain:
    • The name and deadline of the call you want to participate in.
    • Central aims and objectives of the project
    • Challenge (scientific/societal)
    • Strategy/methodology
    • Innovativeness
    • Impact (scientific/societal)
    • Identification of call(s)
    • Required expertise/composition research group
    • Letter of consent from the Head of Department in case of replacement funding. (When you apply for replacement funding during the time that you are preparing your grant application, a letter of consent is required from your Department Head regarding the time you want to be replaced.)
    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €3.000,-. (i.e. all costs have to be made in 2021).
      (If your budget contains wages paid for employment (for someone else), the amount requested must be checked by the HRM officer (Veronique Bremers: v.a.m.j.bremers@vu.nl) and the Head of Finance (Patricia La Chira Marquina: p.l.lachiramarquina@vu.nl) of FGW, who is the Secretary of CLUE+.)
    • WBS element on which the funding can be booked. The employment of the replacement and the cost allocation must be done by the Department Head or the involved Chair.
  • Ad 3. Assistance to support research activities.

    This CLUE+ grant of max. € 3.000,- will allow you to hire an assistant to help you with your research activities. The expected outcome is a published paper and/or research proposal.

    How to apply?

    Applications must contain the following documents:

    • A draft proposal of max. 3 pages in which you motivate how and why you need a research assistant.
    • The name of the potential research assistant (if possible)
    • The expected outcome
    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €3.000,-. (i.e. all costs have to be made in 2021).
      (If your budget contains wages paid for employment (for someone else), the amount requested must be checked by the HRM officer (Veronique Bremers: v.a.m.j.bremers@vu.nl) and the Head of Finance (Patricia La Chira Marquina: p.l.lachiramarquina@vu.nl) of FGW, who is the Secretary of CLUE+.)
    • WBS element on which the funding can be booked. The employment of the replacement and the cost allocation must be done by the Department Head or the involved Chair.
  • Ad 4. Establishing or maintaining consortiums, networks, and public and private partnerships.

    This grant, of a max. of €2.000,-, allows you to build or strengthen networks with external partners (whether academic or societal), through expert meetings, assistance in coordination, collaborations with societal partners, memorandums of understanding or the like.

    How to apply?

    Applicants must submit the following documents:

    • Cover letter (max. 1 page A4).
    • Specification of the kind of network envisaged, the proposed partners and the means through which the network will be established or strengthened;
    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €2.000,- (e.g. all costs have to be made in 2021). Please also mention in your detailed budget estimate third parties who will co-finance the initiative.
  • Ad 5. Policy development and consultancy initiatives.

    You can apply for funding up to €1.000,-. In order to stimulate the implementation of knowledge outside academia, CLUE+ supports researchers who have concrete plans to engage in policy advice, consultancy activities and the like. Governments, NGO’s, knowledge institutes and commercial partners can be commissioners of such projects. Proof of a concrete, paid assignment from a third, commissioning party is required (of a minimum of €2.000).

    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €1.000,- (e.g. all costs have to be made in 2021). Please also mention in your detailed budget estimate third parties who will co-finance the initiative.
  • Ad 6. Valorisation activities.

    CLUE+ offers funding of a max. €2.000,- for valorisation activities you wish to organize or are organizing in 2022, e.g. public outreach activities, exhibitions, (stimulating the use of) research products for societal target groups.

    How to apply?

    Applicants must submit the following documents:

    • Cover letter (max. 1 page A4).
    • Detailed budget estimate of max. €2.000,- (e.g. all costs have to be made in 2021). Please also mention in your detailed budget estimate third parties who will co-finance the initiative.

    All applications should be addressed to the CLUE+ policy officer, Rita van der Schriek-Hermans and sent to clue@vu.nl. As soon as all documents have been received, the applicant will be sent an acknowledgement of receipt.

    How to report?

    The applicant is required to send a final report and overview of the costs incurred within six weeks after the activity has ended.

    Guidelines final report:

    The final report is in English and consist of max. two A4 pages. In the report you give a short description what you have done with the grant you received from the institute. The final report can be send to the CLUE+ policy officer, Rita van der Schriek-Hermans via e-mail: clue@vu.nl.
