This research cluster aims to connect our world-leading fire research at VU with societal partners interested in landscape fires, in the Netherlands and abroad. This research cluster brings together researchers working on fire-related topics from different VU institutes and faculties.
We study fires as an integral part of the Earth system and society, and as driver and consequence of global change. Because of climate warming, fires increasingly pose risks to human lives and infrastructure, also in areas where fires were historically uncommon, such as the Netherlands.
We are the fire science expertise center of the Netherlands. Our knowledge contributes to minimizing the negative effects that fires have on society through collaboration with fire managers. Our geographical scope varies from local to global. We regularly speak to national and international journalists about our work.
At VU, we hold a monthly seminar series in which researchers from different disciplines share their work.
