Shanghai ranking

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) or Shanghai Ranking is a global ranking published annually by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This ranking is based on the following indicators:

  • the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to alumni (worth 10 per cent of the overall ranking score)
  • the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to staff members (worth 20 per cent)
  • the number of highly cited researchers (worth 20 per cent)
  • the number of articles indexed by Web of Science (worth 20 per cent)
  • the number of articles published in Nature and Science. (worth 20 per cent)
  • the weighted scores of the above five indicators divided by the number of full time equilvalent academic staff (worth 10 per cent)

In the Shanghai ranking 2013, VU University Amsterdam has a position in the 101-150 category.
