Environment & Development

Course for Bachelor students - examining and critically reflect on the relationships between economic / social development, and the environment.

What do we mean by the concepts of environment and development and how are the two related? What are the causes and consequences of global environmental change? Is sustainable development, with its notions of environmental 'friendliness', really achievable? These and many other questions will be discussed during this interdisciplinary course. Illustrated case studies from all over the world provide the basis for teaching and learning.

E&D is at the heart of science for sustainability and VU’s commitment to society. Being part of the Minor Development Studies at FSW http://www.vu.nl/nl/opleidingen/minoren/a-z/development-studies/index.asp Bachelor students from various disciplines learn to recognize and analyze the current and potential impact of the major international environmental concerns. They also learn about the complexities of environmental issues related to development, taking into account the different perspectives on environmental problems and possible solutions.
