Mennonite Seminary

The Mennonite Seminary provides preparation for students who intend to become Mennonite pastors as well as continuing education for theologians and practioners in Mennonite congregations and institutions.

Within the Bachelor of Theology and Religious Studies program, students may follow a specialized track in line with the theological and pastoral needs of the Mennonite tradition, as a basis for further training at the postgraduate level, like the three year Master program to become a pastor. The seminary also organizes public lectures, courses, activities and events for all those interested in current themes in the fields of peace, justice, and other areas relevant to Mennonites, like Anabaptist-Mennonite History.

The Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition is known for its commitment to peace, community, and modesty. The seminary, in association with VU Amsterdam, offers a theological education that covers the history of the Anabaptist movement, systematic and practical theology, biblical hermeneutics, and ethics. The main focus is on themes such as peace theology and reconciliation. This program is open to all students who meet the requirements, including those from non-Mennonite backgrounds.

Students (and lecturers) of the Mennonite Seminary (and those who sympathize with it) gather once a month for vesper, a thematic conversation and a common dinner. It is a formation place, building and celebrating community. Together, they particiapte in yearly activities, like the European Mennonite Students of Theology Meeting (EMSTM).

  • Studying at the Seminary

At VU Amsterdam, the Seminary program focuses on the Mennonite tradition and theology/ethics from that distinct perspective. This can be followed in combination with the Bachelor of Theology and Religious Studies program. Apart from that, there is also a minor program in Peace Theology and Anabaptist-Mennonite Traditions that can be chosen either by Theology or non-Theology students who want to deepen their understanding of Anabaptist-Mennonite traditions and Christian theology. The BA can be followed by an additional one-year Master of Theology and Religious Studies program, with a specialization on “Peace, Trauma, Religion”, the two-year Research Master, or the three year Master of Divinity.

  • What will you learn there?

As part of the historic peace church tradition, students are invited to reflect on fundamental questions such as: How do we understand peace? Is peace really possible? How do we respond to the stories of war and violence in the Bible? Through interdisciplinary approaches, students will explore contemporary issues in peace and conflict as well as trauma studies with experts who are also active as Mennonite representatives in global and local peacebuilding networks. Students will explore themes and methodologies from the areas of Bible studies, theology, history, cultural studies, ethics, philosophy, and peace and conflict studies.

  • Student testimonials

Studying at the Mennonite Seminary has helped me connect my theology to what is happening in society. It helps me connect spirituality and activism, resistance, and decoloniality. The seminary is very open, personal, and free place where I feel free to explore where my talents and interests lie. The intercultural and interfaith community around the seminary is incredibly valuable to me.
